How To Say Thank You

October 21, 2009

I am a big giant fan of Aza Raskin. I met him when I interviewed him for The One Minute Commute and he’s always been helpful and kind. He’s also really smart most of the time.

All of this is why I clicked when he posted to Facebook asking for help with an article he’s writing for Wired Magazine. He posted the article with Etherpad.

I gave him some edits and comments along with a few other people and today he said thank you. The message went to his Facebook friends:

Thanks to everyone who helped me with the draft on Government by Iteration for Wired. You are all way smarter than me.

It may not look like much, but that one simple message made me feel happy I’d helped him. Aza isn’t saying he’s stupid or that we’re all geniuses, and it doesn’t feel like false modesty. He’s saying that getting help makes us all smarter. It made me feel like part of his team.

These little gestures are what makes team communication work. It’s the difference between people you’re willing to work with and people you want to work with. What did you do to make your team want to work with you today?
